Success Stories

The following animals have gone through horrible abuse, but are now in the loving and expert care here at Bomar. We are sharing these featured stories with you so you can see that — although the animal abuse statistics look impossible to overcome — to these animals our efforts and your donations have given them new life.

These are just a few of our success stories. 95% of all of our cases have been prosecuted and won.

  Adopted

"Little One" - Grey Gelding, "Cricket" - Bay Filly,
and "Little Missy" - Boston Terrier
They were seized on August 20, 2003 and criminal charges were filed against the owner. Little One had been ridden without a saddle blanket thus creating open sores all along his back. His jaw had been broken previously. He was 125 pounds under weight. Cricket was malnourished and had a heavy parasite infestation. Little Missy was very dehydrated and emaciated. Her five 2-week old pit bull cross puppies were in a chicken coop with only a small dish of water. The horses have been rehabilitated and adopted by a loving family in Corrales, NM. Little Missy was spayed and adopted by a couple who adores her and she will have a job as a therapy dog. The puppies were all adopted and doing well.

Permanent Resident

"Marigold" - Chestnut Thoroughbred Mare
The owners have surrendered custody of a Marigold to Bomar. She was living in a junk yard in Torrance county. When we received her she was emaciated and her hind leg had been mauled by a pit bull several months ago and was left untreated. Although she has many months of medical care ahead of her, she is happy at Bomar and thrilled to be in the company of other horses and loving care. She is expected to make a full recovery.

"Jack" - Thoroughbred Pony
In February, we won our court case on Jack. We found him starved and near death in Cubero, NM. Kevin Lucero, NM Livestock Inspector placed Jack in our custody and filed criminal charges against the owner.

"Tommy" - Horse
He was found emaciated and dehydrated after being abandoned by his owner. He was seized by the Livestock Board and placed in protective custody here at Bomar. He is now recovering and doing well.

"Spunky"
This horse was starving, but is now in our protective custody. He was found at a residence in Valencia county. This case will be heard on June 17th in Los Lunas.

"Rusty" - Sorrel Gelding
We found two starving horses in the Bernalillio county. Rusty survived (unfortunately his companion did not) and is doing well recovering from starvation and loss of his companion. He has made new friends here at Bomar which has helped in his recovery. This case is pending, but we are hopeful in being awarded permanent custody.

"Emily" - Mixed breed Dog
Emily was found chained outside, practically frozen to the ground in January 2002. She was only 19 lbs. She was skeletal and near death. She is now 45 lbs and very happy here at Bomar. On December 4th 2002, Bomar was granted permanent custody of Emily and the owner was sentenced and convicted.

before

after

"Brownie" - BLM Mustang
Brownie was severely malnourished and abandoned. According to witnesses, Brownie had been beaten with chains. The bones in her face of jaw had at one time been broken. Although she has extreme fear of people we have made progress with patience and loving care to be able to touch her. It will take a long time to win her complete trust, but she is no longer in abject terror. She is recovering and her quality of life is getting better everyday!
